Abstract:
This presentation will discuss nonlinear fiber-optics and its applications in optical communication systems and in biomedical spectroscopy/microscopy.
Topics will include: Four-wave mixing in semiconductor lasers/amplifiers and in optical fiber, Modulation instability in fiber-optic systems, Cross-phase modulation in a WDM fiber system, Raman crosstalk and its impact in a fiber system, soliton self-frequency shift in a nonlinear fiber, Multi-photon microscopy, CARS spectroscopy using chirped pulses, and SRS spectroscopy.
Biography:
Dr. Rongqing Hui received the B. S. and M.S. Degrees from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China in 1982 and 1988, respectively, and the PhD Degree from Polytechnic University of Torino, Italy in 1993, all in Electrical Engineering.
Dr. Hui is a professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the University of Kansas in Lawrence KS. His research interests are in lightwave communication systems and subsystems, photonic devices, optical instrumentation and photonic sensors. Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Kansas in 1997, Dr. Hui was a member of scientific staff at Bell-Northern Research and then Nortel-networks in Ottawa, Canada, where he was involved in the research and development of high-speed optical fiber communication systems. From April 2006 to December 2007, Dr. Hui was Program Director of the Electronics, Photonics and device Technologies (EPDT) program within the ECS division in National Science Foundation with core responsibility for proposals in the areas of Photonics, optoelectronics and optical device technologies. From May 2001 to July 2007, Dr. Hui was Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Communications. From July 2006, he is Associate Editor of IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics.
