Abstract: In this largely non-technical talk, I will describe my own perspective about image processing - what is it? how did I choose this field? why do I think it is an exciting field? I attempt to show a holistic view about image processing (as an example of engineering field) is beneficial to the junior researchers entering the field. I will use three examples of image models (MRF, wavelets and nonlocal) to illustrate the connection between image processing and other scientific fields. In particular, I will advocate the importance of reproducible research to the community of image processing.

Bio: Xin Li received the B.S. degree with highest honors in electronic engineering and information science from University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, in 1996, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, in 2000. He was a Member of Technical Staff with Sharp Laboratories of America, Camas, WA from Aug. 2000 to Dec. 2002. Since Jan. 2003, he has been a faculty member in Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. His research interests include image/video coding and processing.
